What is PDF Redaction?
PDF redaction is the permanent removal of sensitive information from documents. Unlike highlighting or covering text with shapes, true redaction completely deletes the underlying content from the PDF file structure. Our tool is permanent and irreversible — the content is completely removed from the file.
True Redaction (Our Tool)
- ✓ Content is permanently deleted from the PDF
- ✓ Information cannot be recovered or revealed
- ✓ GDPR and HIPAA compliant for legal use
- ✓ Safe to share publicly or with third parties
Fake Redaction (Insecure)
- ✗ Simply covers text with black boxes or shapes
- ✗ Original text remains in the file and can be copied
- ✗ Can be revealed by moving or deleting the overlay
- ✗ Not compliant for legal or regulatory purposes
Warning: Many PDF editors only add black boxes over text without actually removing it. This is dangerous for sensitive documents — the original text can still be copied, searched, or revealed. PDFNinja rasterizes each page after applying redactions, so nothing underneath survives.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the redaction truly permanent?
Yes. Text under your marks is removed from the PDF's content stream in place and replaced with solid black, so nothing remains to copy or OCR. For pages with complex layouts (scanned images, embedded forms) the whole page is rasterized to an image. Either way the original content no longer exists in the output file.
Do my files get uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser using WebAssembly and JavaScript. Your PDF never leaves your device.
Can redacted text be recovered by copy-paste or OCR bypass?
No — the underlying text objects are physically removed from the file. There is nothing to copy, and the redacted areas are solid black pixels.
Is this GDPR / HIPAA compliant?
The tool applies true redaction that satisfies the technical requirement for permanent removal. Compliance also depends on your process — always keep an unredacted original in a secure location.
Will the output PDF be larger?
Sometimes — since pages become high-resolution images. The trade-off is guaranteed security. Run our Compress PDF tool afterward if you need a smaller file.
